Banning No. 4

AMD Inc. has operated and maintained Banning No. 4 since 1988.

The Banning Plant is pumping 3.5 MGD of treated mine water which flows into the Youghiogheny River. The raw water has a pH of 7.0 and an iron concentration of approximately 30. Untreated water could potentially affect the town of West Newton, PA (Pop. 2,500). Since taking over this plant we changed the flow of sludge from pumped to gravity system reducing energy costs by $5,000 per month. We also downsized the motors on the aeration system eliminating the energy required for 2 motors that consumed 30 HP on a constant basis.

  • Designed and installed a submersible pump to be used as an aerator, thus reducing the cost and maintenance of the floating style aerators.
  • Initiated several changes including the use of 50% Hydrogen Peroxide to cut down on long term treatment costs.
  • Removed one entire sludge pump and motor, installed a gravity sludge disposal line for sludge removal.

Mathies Mine

AMD Inc. has been treating the Mathies Mine Site since 2002.

We currently pump and treat 1.44 MGD of acid mine drainage plus treat an additional 1.87 MGD of gravity flow from the mine itself.

  • We constructed two treatment ponds at this site and installed 1,600 feet of 15” PVC pipe from the mine mouth to the ponds. The first pond is lined with a 40 mil. HDPE liner and the second pond is an un-lined polishing pond.
  • Set and installed an 8,000 gallon chemical storage tank for sodium hydroxide.
  • Constructed a containment wall and sump at the pit mouth of the mine itself with a discharge pipe in the middle.

Clyde Mine

Clyde Plant has been operated by AMD Inc. under contract since 1997.

The Clyde mine is pumping 2.01 MGD of treated mine water which then flows into Ten Mile Creek. The outflow would affect Clarksville, PA (Pop. 5,000). The raw water has a pH of 6.0 and iron concentration of 30 mg/l.

  • Installed an upgraded filtration system of the creek water used for process during treatment.
  • Installed a larger pipeline to replace the existing intake waterline. The original design had two submersible pumps delivering water to the plant with filter bags attached to the discharge. This experienced problems as the solenoid valves continually blocked up with small particles. This larger delivery line reduced operating costs by the use of raw water from Ten Mile Creek and elimiated usage charges for municipal water.

Russellton Berry Plant

AMD Inc. has been treating effluent from the Russelton Plant since 1989.

The Russellton Berry Plant in Allegheny County is pumping an average of 1.6 MGD of treated mine water daily. This treated water flows into Little Deer Creek, which is a local West Deer Township stocked trout stream.

  • In 2011, we installed a vertical turbine pump and motor on site. We were able to complete the install, all relative maintenance and rebuild the 300HP motor seemlessly within the scope of our experienced staff’s skills, knowledge and abilities.
  • In 2014, we changed the plant over to 50% hydrogen peroxide, drastically saving on operating costs.

Bird Mines No. 2 and No. 3

Since 1994 the bird mine drainage treatment plant has been operated by AMD Inc. sister company Warrior Services Inc.

The Bird Mines are pumping 5.8 MGD of treated mine water daily. Water from Bird Mine in Tire Hill, Cambria County is pumped from the mines and then treated with quick lime, aerated, settled, and discharged in accordance with effluent limits.

  • AMD Inc. modified the treatment plant by installing a pre-aeration cell that reduced polymer usage by 90 percent.
  • While maintaining compliance with discharge limitations, we eliminated two ponds along with four surface aerators, which substantially reduced operating costs.

Marianna No. 58

AMD Inc. has been under contract for the Marianna Site since 2003.

Our staff performs MSHA Impoundment Inspections for Marianna. We inspect storm water runoff from a coal refuse disposal site and provide extensive maintenance of the facility including mowing 80 acres of brush and grass on an extremely steep embankment.
